I do have a different take on this! In 2007 when I started teaching 9th grade English on Florida's east coast, the school assigned A Land Remembered as the 9th grade summer read. I really did enjoy it. Maybe it as because we lived close to some of the sites in the book. Maybe it was because I didn't know much about Florida's history back then.
I do remember many of my 9th graders saying they loved it and that it was one of the only books they ever read!
Not at all surprised. It's a remarkable book and I can see why 9th graders would love it with the emphasis on adventure and as it begins to center around Zach. As for the history, it was all mostly new to me too which was quite captivating. And the environment, whew, all I could think about was the bugs! Nevermind all the other critters! LOL! I'd just had enough of it, so I put it aside. I'm keeping it at hand for study. The guy's a great writer.
Florida history really has twists and turns. I think non- historical fiction by way of Carl Hiasan got me started, then really enjoyed Orleans’ The Orchid Thief. It’s a fascinating landscape with so much going on. The feral cattle were a surprise. Good luck with your book!
Sounds fascinating, though I think I'd enjoy the cattle more than the tycoons :-)
I like my gilded age a little bit gilded ;0
