Although brutalism isn’t boring, it’s overpowering. My company moved into a completely new quarter a few years ago, and it’s all bland, white cubes in various heights. I still have to pay attention or I just walk past our building because they all look same-ish. We’re there for 6 years now? 🤦♀️
Such interesting history! I'd heard about Flagler, didn't know he was such a rogue. Your photos are beautiful -- and so neat there's 'another' Florida!
It's so great it exists. I've read so many Carl Hiaasen books, one tends to believe differently. I do have friends though in a sweet spot, Island Grove, where Rawlings wrote The Yearling. It's still orchard groves and small time stuff.
He's an organic lettuce farmer, has been there most of his life, early years--then off to CA for college, etc --and back to Island Grove area for long long time now. Actually part of Rawlings' orchards came on the market maybe 10 yrs ago and he bought 10, to add to his farm. It's a great little place, with all those beautiful HUGE trees. Love it there.
I wonder what Ida did that convinced him she was insane. 🫠
This was so intriguing and now I just want to know more!
It's a reasonable question, right? I mean, she was Mary #1's caregiver. He had to have known what she was like. Dodgy stuff.
Sounds like he was in the Henry VIII Bro Society
Lol! Perfect.
Thanks for that delightful history lesson and the pretty photos 😍
It's definitely all about the architecture. Lol!
Is it just me or has modern architecture become bland and boring?
Hah, boring a best. Some is down right horrid. Ironically, my design school was on a Brutalist style campus. (State University of NY at Purchase).
That’s … brutal *shows herself out* 😜

Thanks! Yes, this "another Florida" is still a surprise even after I've been here this long.

Oh yes! We've been to Rawlings' cracker house/orchard several times. Love it!
