I began reading a novel by Tash Aw that was set in Malaysia. I believe it was We The Survivors. But I never finished it. It initially interested me as I visited Malaysia over 30 years ago.

Ah! Thanks for noting Tash Aw. Looking at his books, The Harmony Silk Factory and Map of the Invisible World feel more in the "historical" category (although, we all get there eventually, right?) My husband's parents were in Indonesia in the 1960s. He was sewing up the necks of people on both sides of that conflict. I'm going to add Map of the Invisible World to my tall TBR.

Love Tan Twan Eng's books. But I also came here to mention Tash Aw's work. The Harmony Silk Factory is a really interesting book. Another Malaysian author worth checking out is Preeta Samarasan. She wrote Evening is the Whole Day, also historical fiction.

Oh, marvelous! I'll look her up. Tan Twan Eng's new one just published yesterday!

Published a bit earlier in the UK I think because I've already got a copy! Booker longlisted too.

Thanks! Don't we wish we could read them all? But then, when would we write?
