If you're dedicating an iPad to reading long form fiction, you should take a look at what I have to offer. I write long-form short stories. Read my "ABOUT"page, here: https://benwoestenburg.substack.com/about

I think you might like that one. It's layered, and may have a few surprises for you...I hope.

Also, I don’t think we discussed that your work in progress has something to do with Lebanon. My second novel, that I plan to start working in next week is partially set in Lebanon, or at lease one of the main characters comes from Lebanon to Jamaica. I’m not sure if part of the novel will actually take place in Lebanon or reference will be made to Lebanon. I haven’t figured that out yet.

Oh, that's cool! My main character travels up the coast. Another character takes a more inland route. (7th century). Would that be unusual for someone to come from Lebanon to Jamaica? Or is there a broader connection?

My grandfather came from Lebanon to Jamaica around the time of WWI. He is the inspiration for one of the main characters in the novel. There is a strong Syrian/Lebanese community in Jamaica, as there is in other Caribbean island like Trinidad.

I had wanted part of the novel to be set in Lebanon, but I'm not sure that would be the best choice for the novel as a whole. Instead, I'm thinking of incorporating several short poems written by my grandfather's character. These poems will be translated into English by his nephew, bit by bit, as the novel progresses. This will not only allow the reader to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of Lebanon but also gradually reveal the hardships the character went through during the Mount Lebanon Famine of WWI. By doing so, readers will better understand what motivates the character to act the way he does. Any thoughts about that? Your honest feedback is welcome.

Oh, this sounds fantastic. I love the idea of weaving in the backstory. Could be much more interesting/suspenseful than a more straightforward handling, without pulling your out of your main story.

Wow! This Mount Lebanon Famine - I had to look it up.

I have some scenes taking place in the shadow of Musa Dagh - location of an Armenian resistence to the WWI genocide. Of course, I knew nothing about this enclave until I was researching the area for my own time period (7th Century).

Man! This is why I get so excited about historical fiction!

So does your novel have something to do with the Armenian resistance?
